"There can never be a Janet Gaynor and Charles Farrell love team again."
--Janet Gaynor, 1970
From their first iconic pairing in 7th Heaven (1927) and in eleven films that followed, Janet Gaynor and Charles Farrell created an unparalleled cinematic romance. Their partnership was so utterly complete that in the minds and hearts of their adoring public, they were as one. Even though both enjoyed successful solo careers-Janet Gaynor won the first Best Actress Oscar and played Vicki Lester in the original A Star Is Born (1937) and Charles Farrell enjoyed a successful television career, playing Vern Albright on My Little Margie-their work as a team stood out. Even decades after their onscreen partnership ended, any mention of Gaynor in the press merited a mention of Farrell, and vice-versa.
Behind the camera, Gaynor and Farrell carried on a secret romance that lasted from their first meeting in 1926 until Gaynor's first marriage in 1929. Supporting and encouraging each other's lives beyond Hollywood, they were able to maintain a mellow friendship that lasted their entire lives.
Drawing upon previously unpublished interviews with Charles Farrell and Janet Gaynor, formal interviews with family and friends who knew them best, and meticulous archival research, author Sarah Baker details the fascinating behind the scenes story of the greatest romantic team of all time. The book includes a detailed filmography and is lavishly illustrated with over 100 photographs, many from Charles Farrell's estate. Includes a foreword by director Allison Anders (Grace of My Heart, Things Behind the Sun).
Sarah Baker achieves the same distinction with Lucky Stars Janet Gaynor & Charles Farrell (with a foreword by director Allison Anders), a dual bio of two of the most important and popular starts of the late silent/early sound era. Immortalized by Frank Borzage in the extraordinary 7th HEAVEN (1927), STREET ANGEL (1928), and LUCKY STAR (1929) Gaynor and Farrell were screendom’s greatest romantic team during this period, and under his exquisite direction touched the hearts of an entire generation. While they made eight other films together with such directors as David Butler and Raoul Walsh, it is the three Borzages that represent their penultimate collaboration, three movies that represent the great artistic heights possible during the late silents. All three titles are available in 20th Century-Fox’s Borzage/Murnau set from a couple of years ago and endlessly reward the viewer. In Lucky Stars the author includes previously unpublished interviews with Gaynor and Farrell, over 100 photographs, and has drawn upon the Fox Archives at UCLA, among others. - National Board of Review's April 2010 webpage
Sarah Baker's first foray into classic film was a seven-year labor of love-a documentary film about silent film star Olive Thomas. Over the course of her research, Baker located ten of Thomas' twenty films-all of which had been considered lost. The resulting documentary, Olive Thomas Everybody's Sweetheart, executive produced by Hugh Hefner, was released to DVD (2004) along with Thomas' film The Flapper -the first time this film had been available to the public since 1920. She is currently in production for another documentary, Blues Man The Life and Times of Sean Costello.

LUCKY STARS JANET GAYNOR CHARLES FARRELL eBook Sarah Baker
"Lucky Stars" is a straightforward, loving and easily read biography of Janet Gaynor and Charles Farrell, a very successful box office team who bridged the silent to talkie era. Gaynor won the first Best Actress Oscar, had the more interesting film career and a most intriguing life after films, married to famous dress designer Adrian. Farrell retired from films, his stardom fading rather quickly but enjoyed a resurgence on television in the 50s. He became a Hollywood institution as the founder of the Palm Springs Racquet Club, a very popular recreational facility for the rich and famous. The book proposes that Farrell and Gaynor were off screen lovers as well as on screen which seems entirely plausible. There has been speculation over the years about both stars's sexual preferences which the book deals with sensibly, for those who might be interested. More importantly, we get a real feel for Gaynor's ambitious and meticulous standards (no shrinking violet, this lady) and Farrell's nice guy image (not a complex character). Gaynor's son is quoted which adds a genuine touch to the narrative.
There are lots of good photos along the way and sufficient analysis of their films to provoke some interest to track the best of them down. Fox have released a superb package which contains some of their best work so you can find out what the fuss was all about if you wish to.

LUCKY STARS JANET GAYNOR CHARLES FARRELL eBook Sarah Baker Reviews
Wow! What a great book! I loved it from beginning to end. Can't wait to see what else Mrs. Baker writes.
Was thrilled to see a story about two almost forgotten stars. I've always wondered what happened to them in their later years
Straight forward, easy-to-read look at the lives and work of both Charles Farrell and Janet Gaynor. There were plenty of interviews with those who worked with each of them as well as summaries of their films - both with each other and apart. Their lives after they retired from film making were covered. There were plenty of photos as well as a good filmography of each individually as well as the films they made together.
The title for my review was taken from a statement made by Janet Gaynor long after her career and that of Chas. Farrell had ended. She is entirely correct. Ms.Baker's wonderful book, which I could hardly put down, is such an addition to film history and so overdue; it is a shame that such legends as Gaynor & Farrell are not placed in the "legendary" category of film stars and couples, where they certainly belong.
They are perfect together. They fell in love at first sight in 1927; and in 1929 Charlie was still begging Janet to marry him. I'm always saddened when real life love is thwarted. Studio politics, impulsive/wrong decisions, hasty "marriages" to others, poor timing, etc., etc., all played their part. And when he has a wife who won't grant him a divorce... (Reminds me of the sad story of MacDonald and Eddy).
There were other chances for them, especially in 1934. They had made 12 films together and were as popular as ever. We are all aware of "7th Heaven and "Street Angel" directed by Frank Borzage; he and Janet won the first Oscars for acting and direction; she also won for "Sunrise". (Charlie was not even nominated!).
Such an informative, interesting book; I could hardly put it down. So many silent legends are terribly ignored. I'm so happy Ms. Baker wrote their story. Janet Gaynor & Charles Farrell were magic together in films, and their history in classic films should never be forgotten.
Actually, as the title implies, there are two biographies here and they are skillfully interwoven by author Sarah Baker giving us a closeup look at Gaynor and Farrell. This is much appreciated and much needed as they have been all but forgotten especially Charles Farrell. A lot of this has to do with the unavailability of the twelve movies they made together. Virtually all of the Fox film library was destroyed in a warehouse fire in 1937 including all of the company's silent negatives. Their surviving Frank Borzage collaborations (7TH HEAVEN, STREET ANGEL, LUCKY STAR) have had to come from abroad while SUNNY SIDE UP only recently resurfaced in America. In the case of Farrell he let his Fox contract lapse and descended into low budget films for smaller studios before giving up films altogether to run and expand the Palm Springs Racquet Club. He successfully returned to the public eye as Gale Storm's father on MY LITTLE MARGIE in the 1950s. After rejecting Darryl F. Zanuck's "casting couch" and being given lightweight films beneath her talents, Gaynor left Fox and went to Selznick International where she made a few flms including A STAR IS BORN before deciding to walk away while she was still young (32) and at the top of her game.
In addition to the films, Baker goes into the personal background of both stars tracking their rise to fame and disspelling many of the myths surrounding their private lives including their sexual orientation. Charlie was quite the ladies' man especially after Janet turned down his proposal of marriage in 1929. He married only once but continued to play the field whereas Janet married three times, the last two (to designer Gilbert Adrian and producer Paul Gregory) being happy ones. We are treated to such interesting tidbits as Janet being nicknamed "the platinum butterfly" at Fox because she had an inner strength that belied her delicate physical appearance while Charles Farrell was responsible for the creation of the "Bloody Mary" (meant to ease the effects of a hangover) which was concocted at the Palm Spring Racquet Club and originally called the "Farrell Flip". Now that more and more of their films are becoming available for reassessment it is possible to see why they were once so popular and why they deserve to be remembered. Sarah Baker's book does an excellent job in addressing their neglect and should be read by anyone interested in the history of early Hollywood and two of its brightest stars.
