Rea Ashby was just your average vampire. She had a cat, a nemesis, and a best friend to share in all her irreverent adventures. Each day was endlessly predictable as the next, until a representative from the ominous Vardoc Council came to town and took her and the rest of the vampire youth with him when he left.
Forcibly relocated to a monastery in the middle of the Canadian Rockies, Rea and her friends find themselves in the middle of a constant struggle. A struggle to train, a struggle to survive, but most of all, a struggle not to lose themselves in the process.
Tensions are stretched to the brink as Rea makes a forbidden human friend in town, and in the process, discovers a secret that shakes the very foundations of everything she’s been led to believe. But Rea’s not the only one with a secret. The Council has a secret of its own. One that could change everything…

I'll start with the disclaimer that I am not a big YA fan and I'm even less when it comes to vampires. But I also never turn down the chance to read a free book :) Plus I have a teen girl and a tween girl and I'm always on the lookout for good books to hand them. They're not jaded on vampires so I had high hopes for this one. I wasn't disappointed. The characters were interesting and new. The idea of having them choosing an age to stop growing fascinated me and I hope that comes to the forefront more in the (hopefully) coming books. West did a great job of making those vampires who were "older" in chronological years have a certain maturity that the younger ones lacked. The tension between food and human was nicely done as well. How does one become friends with their food without a lot of guilt? I don't know it's partly why I'm a vegetarian but I liked that the author didn't shy from those contradictions. The only downsides were minor but enough to make me hesitate on five (I wish I could do 4.5). First, the name thing with Haden and Hayen really did get confusing at times. Second, romance? Yay or nay? Now my 13 year old will be thrilled at the nay but I found myself a little confused. At times it seemed to strongly hint there was a love thing going on but then at other times no. I don't mind a little tease but this felt too drawn out and didn't end with a satisfactory answer. And honestly I'd be good with "Nope. Just friends." Third, the creepy element of the older vampire with the MC was creepy but added to his overall ick. However, I wasn't quite sure if I was reading it in there.
But mostly West is an excellent writer and the story moved well. I'll be passing the book along to my girls knowing they'll really enjoy it. I can't wait for the next installment.

Sparks and Ashes Storybook Tales 1 eBook Natalie West Reviews
I enjoyed reading about these young vampires. The charachters had great personalities and showed growth throughout the story. A new take on the vampire story without being overly violent or x-rated. A great addition to the young adult field of book. I will reccommend this to my young adult.
I don't want to put it down-excellent job with the characters and plot. PLEASE tell me there will be another!
I really loved the story. I am hoping that their will be a sequel! It was an interesting new culture of vampires. I like that they are still "children" at 40! Not sure why Hayden and Haynes had to have names so similar. That was the only thing that bugged me a little. I'm hoping to see some more twists and connections in hopefully the next book!
Well written YA Vampire novel with multilayed characters and a plot line that keeps the reader engaged. I love that the ending sets up the reader wanting more and curious as to what will happen next. Great set up for part two! Well done, Natalie West!
I am not ordinarily a reader of YA fiction, nor of vampire fiction, but I found this story well-written, well-paced, lively and interesting - never predictable. I did not anticipate being curious at the end, but I was! Very curious! Cannot wait to see where this new freedom and independence will lead this young vampirish-tribe in the future. How will they find a way to live ethically and creatively within a world run by and for human beings? How will "the Council" view their attempts. (I anticipate that we have not seen the end of their attempts to control and use these "new generation vampires." Hope the author will not keep us waiting long to find out!
P.S. I was astonished that anyone could create vampire characters I could relate to or care about. That was the biggest surprise of all. This book is so much better than the well-known "Twilight" series that there is really no comparison.
Wow. Absolutely, WOW!
Natalie's writing is absolutely amazing. I love YA literature, but I always find myself frustrated at the lack of depth of character as well as the complete predictability of the plot; Sparks and Ashes is new and exciting! It is not limited by the genre, but instead finds ways to use the freedoms of YA to explore this world through the eyes of a protagonist that is unlike any I have ever read before.
I got this book for free after seeing it on one of my free book alerts. I did not know the author or the series, but like YA vampire stories so decided to give it a try. This book was interesting, and I liked it but the story was also inconsistent. I did enjoy that the YA's bonded as a family and I loved the friendship between Hayden and Rea. The story continues in book 2, but I am not sure if I want to know what happens from here. I spotted a few typos, but they were very minor.
Examples of the Story inconsistencies **Spoiler Alert*** #1 The time at Carmichael was supposed to be this hard, torturous grueling event yet they got weekends off. #2 The YA's are taken to Carmichael because they have gotten too spoiled with modern day life, but yet are allowed to still acquire material possessions which the Vardoc supposedly despise. #3 The YA vampires apparently have a soft spot for humans and want their use as a source of food to somehow be looked upon as less egregious as the senior vampires view that humans are just for food and there should be no commingling between the species.
